Balibó Fort has played an important role in Timor Leste’s as the largest fort and most intact example of a Portuguese Fort architecture. The fort commands sweeping views across the village of Balibó, down to the port town of Batugade, across the Ombai-Wetar Straits and into West Timor. The presence of the fort and its role as a military stronghold helped to define the border between Portuguese-controlled East Timor and Dutch-controlled West Timor in the 19th century.

You can start the day... read more watching the sunrise through the mist over the valley and end it with a cold drink on the terrace watching the colours of the sunset over the water.
