Balibó Fort has played an important role in Timor Leste’s as the largest fort and most intact example of a Portuguese Fort architecture. The fort commands sweeping views across the village of Balibó, down to the port town of Batugade, across the Ombai-Wetar Straits and into West Timor. Living the history - For such a peaceful and beautiful mountain village, it’s hard to believe it has seen such tragedy and struggle. And yet, wandering between the battlements of the fort and tracing... read more the steps of the Balibo Five down to Australia House, their story becomes very real.
The new rooms are five star standard, with views over the village, the food was delicious, and sunset over the ocean from the front garden was stunning. There’s also layers of history that go with the fort, with plenty of information and books available in the foyer.
Louisa spoke fluent English and was very helpful, arranging us transport from the border and back to Dili, as well as taking us to see a local waterfall!
A highly recommended experience!
The terrace at Balibo Fort Hotel is one of my favourite places, so it was great to be back after a few years. You can start the day... read more watching the sunrise through the mist over the valley and end it with a cold drink on the terrace watching the colours of the sunset over the water. The rooms are lovely and comfortable and the food and service is excellent. This hotel provides a lovely rest from the exciting bustle of a trip to Timor and a great base to explore the surrounding town and area.
2 Star place - I can’t confirm the good reviews from visitors. The place might have history, the town itself has nothing, the restaurant serves average to boring food. The sunset tho is lovely... read more to watch from their backyard.
Rooms are basic, bed sheets are with spots and filthy. Breakfast is a joke, you get a toast and a cold precooked egg. See the pic, this is all you get plus dried out toast.
