The History of Balibo Fort

Within its ancient fort walls, Balibó Fort was once the formidable military stronghold of the Portuguese army that has shaped the course of history in Timor-Leste. It’s ancient grounds of 400 years old served a crucial role in defining the borders of Portuguese-controlled East Timor & Dutch-controlled West Timor during the 16th century and now stands as a testament to centuries of colonial history of Timor-Leste.

Today, Balibó Fort stands as more than just a historic monument—it is a living testament to the resilience and spirit of the Timorese people. Each stone of its ancient walls tells a tale of struggle & triumph. One of the most intriguing features of Balibó Fort is the cannons, relics of a bygone era, which bear witnessed to the battles and conflicts that once raged across the Timorese landscape.
